About Lakshdweep

Lakshadweep chain of islands are coral atolls. An atoll is a coral organism, which is lying exactly at the surface of the ocean where air and water meet. This being the only condition under which coral can live. The shap of coral here is like a ring and encircles a staggeringly beautiful emerald-blue lagoon.

To pick up a coral as a souvenir, it is strictly illegal, being punishable with heavy fines. Moreover, the Non-availability of drinking water accounts for a number of islands being uninhabited. Of the 36 islands covering a land area of 32 sq. km, only 10 are inhabited there. The people of the islands are very similar to the people of the state of Kerala. Majority of Lakshdweep are Muslims, and speak Malayalam except in Minicoy where Mahli is spoken.

In Lakshdweep, the coconut cultivation and fishing are the chief occupations of the people, whose folklore and customs are, not surprisingly, largely derived from the sea. Lakshadweep comprises of 27 small islets, which are scattered over an area of about a hundred kms. Lakshadweep tourism offers turquoise blue waters, virgin beaches, and a wide range of water sports and marine attractions, Lakshadweep is one of the most popular tourist destinations of India.

Weather

Lakshadweep has a tropical climate, with summers during March to May have temperatures ranging from 22°C to 35°C. And April and May are hottest months with an average temperature around 32°C. During Winters, December to February have a temperature range of 20°C to 32°C. Monsoons during June to August provide very heavy intermittent rainfalls. Strong blow of winds from the Sea is a common feature in Lakshadweep.

Airports

NEPC Airlines operates flights from Cochin to Agatti Island. Tourists are ferried from Agatti to other places, by fast boats. A helicopter service links Agatti to the other islands is also there.

Ship

Vessels ply between Cochin in Kerala and Lakshadweep. However, Rates vary according to the type of accomodation.

Transport

The Agatti Aerodrome on Agatti Island is the only airport in Lakshadweep. From April 2007, Kingfisher Airlines, has commenced flights to and from Agatti. Kingfisher connects Kochi and Bangalore to Agatti. And, the other islands are linked by a helicopter or boat service. Permits and transportation can be arranged from Kochi in Kerala.
