Tripura is the second most smallest state of the Indian Nation. Initially, this was an Union Territory but in the year 1972 the status of Tripura was lifted to a full fledged state. The very first thing during Tripura tourism the one notices about Tripura is its natural beauty and picturesque landscape. It has rolling hills, dales, lush green valleys that all add an extra dimension to ones understanding about Tripura. Tripura is divided into three Districts and ten sub- divisions that includes Tripura West with Agartala as its headquarter, Tripura North with Kailasahar as its headquarter and Tripura South which has Udaipur as its headquarter.
The first mention about Tripura tourism can be found in the Mahabharata and also in the pillar inscription of Asoka. Before Tripura was merged with the Union of India it was a princely state and was ruled by the Manikya dynasty for 3000 years and Udaipur was the capital of Princely Tripura but later under King Krishna Manikya the capital was shifted to old Agartala and it was only in the 19th Century that the present city of Agartala became the capital of the state of Tripura. Travel to this amazing state offers the most important historical fact about Tripura is its merger with India in 1949, after the Ganamukti Parishad movement.

This smallest state extends between 22° 56' N & 24° 32' N and 90° 09' E & 92° 10' E, with an area of 10,492 km². It is surrounded on the north, west, and south by the Bangladesh and it is accessible to the rest of India through the Cachar district of Assam and Aizawl district of Mizoram in the east.

Tripura normally observes tropical weather, marked by heat and humidity. Summers, winters and monsoons are the three seasons enjoyed by this beautiful state. Where summers extend from the month of March till May, and the temperature soars up to the maximum of 35°C. In the late-May, pre-monsoon showers soak the region and the Monsoon season formally arrives in June and prevails till September. The average rainfall of this state is 2100 mm, the state actually receives heavy downpour.
October is comparatively pleasant as regards weather. Winter season elongates from November to February, where the average minimum temperature remains 10.5°C. Best time to visit Tripura is between the months of September-March.

Agartala airport connects Tripura to the rest of India by air. This is popularly known as C.A. Agartala, the airport is situated at a distance of just 12 km to the south eastern part of the city, which is equipped with all the modern amenities, the airport at Agartala proffers the passengers with a safe and secured journey to their desired destinations.

Total length of railway lines within the state extended up to Manu is 66 km. Manu-Agartala Railway line (Length-88 km) has been declared as National Project and target date has been fixed for completion of the project by March 2007.
